When it comes to mixing chic and trendy in an effortless way, French women seem to hold all the answers. In the attempt of uncovering the “je ne sais quoi” of French style, we followed some of the most renowned French fashion bloggers, editors, stylists and designers.
Here’s what we found out:
Style lesson #1: Don’t over-accessorize
Accessories can be tricky – they can complement your outfit or completely overwhelm and destroy it. French women, in their mastery, know that, which is why you would almost never see one wear more than three pieces of jewelry at once. In fact, they usually avoid any possibility of a cluttered look, and wear a single statement piece. So, next time you are debating over wearing a flashy necklace and/ or bold earrings, put one item back in the jewelry box.
Style lesson #2: Always dress your best
Sweatpants in public? Not a chance. Being comfortable does not mean you have to look like you rolled out of bed and immediately walked out of the house. French women try to dress their best every day. And, according to Inès de la Fressange, they don’t do it to impress, but because it makes them feel good.
Style lesson #3: Find your own signature look
Parisian fashionistas, rather than focusing on the latest trends, invest in wardrobes that flatter their best features. Find a style that suits you and develop a signature look that flatters your body as much as your personality.
Style lesson #4: Don’t show the name of the brand
As much as we enjoy wearing designer pieces, clothes or accessories with flashy logos exude a certain level of tackiness. Luxury is synonymous with attitude and is not shown by the name of the brand, but rather by the way you wear your clothes.
Style lesson #5: Go for neutral colors
Neutral tones like black, white, gray, navy blue or beige offer a uniform that screams elegance. Perfect colors for day wear on an outing or to head into the office, these hues are also easily transitioned for nighttime festivities. A neutral palette also accentuates a sense of order and cleanliness and is easily mixed and matched for a more diverse range of outfits with just a few key pieces.
Style lesson #6: Master the bed-hair hairstyle
French women have mastered sexy, bed-head hair with frizzy, almost messy waves. The appeal is that it feels very natural and flowing, and offers a relaxed, easy-going presence. Rather than spending 45 minutes trying to brush, flatten and make your hair submit, let your natural waves, curls, frizz do their thing.
